I had a blazzing fun time with sixth graders at Escalante Middle School in Durango, Colorado. Everyone folded an origami samurai helmet and learned to say Sugoi, which means Awesome in Japanese. The more something is awesome, the more you accent the G in Sugoi. They wore their sugoi helmets while we discussed Passion and Prejudice, the themes in my book Ayumi's Violin. The students had sizzling passions ranging from writing, basketball, and skiing to trumpet and violin. Whatever their passions are, they are working hard at it. I was happy to hear that most of them had not experienced prejudice first hand, but had compassion for those who did.
